Comprehensive thermal analysis of a high stability Cu–Zr–Al bulk metallic glass subjected to high-pressure torsion

Abstract Bulk metallic glass of Cu 38 Zr 54 Al 8 nominal composition was synthesized by copper mold casting into 6 mm diameter rods. Disks the as-cast were subjected to severe plastic deformation high-pressure torsion for different number revolutions. The microstructure and thermal behavior as-cast, isothermally annealed deformed have been investigated X-ray diffraction differential scanning calorimetry, respectively. Continuous heating experiments revealed a two-stage devitrification event with excellent forming parameters, such as transition ( T g = 671 K), supercooled liquid region (∆ x 80 reduced r 0.57) gamma parameter γ 0.41). Power law crystal growth during diffusion-controlled homogeneous nucleation observed isothermal annealings. Glassy state preserved almost in entire sample volume alloy process, corresponding extreme stability against deformation-induced devitrification. This is accordance reversible specific heat from glassy measured modulated calorimetry. It also concluded that structure more ordered severely state.
